Rainy Day Date Ideas in Perth That Don't Involve Staying Home
Perth's reputation for sunshine makes the rainy day problem worse. You had it all planned — Cottesloe, Fremantle, something outdoors. Now it's a southwest front and you need a plan that works entirely inside.
Perth gets around 800mm of rain a year, most of it in winter. The indoor date scene has caught up to that reality. Petition Wine Bar, the Art Gallery of WA, and the State Library cultural precinct in Northbridge give you more than enough to work with. Here are six options.
🌧 It's literally raining right now
Option 1: Petition Wine Bar, State Buildings, St Georges Tce. Stunning heritage space, walk-in early evening. 5 minutes from Perth station. No booking needed before 6:30pm.
Option 2: Art Gallery of Western Australia, Cultural Centre, Northbridge. Free, open until 5pm. 10-minute walk from the CBD. No plan required.
6 Perth Rainy Day Date Ideas Worth Doing
1. Escapism — Escape Room, CBD
A well-regarded escape room operation in Perth's CBD. The rooms are properly built — not padlocks and riddles, but actual narrative-driven puzzles. An hour of collaborative problem-solving that works regardless of the weather outside and tells you something real about how someone handles mild pressure.
Pick the medium difficulty. It's the sweet spot between interesting and achievable.
Cost: $35 per person. Booking: Required. Watch out: Multiple escape room venues in Perth — confirm you're booking the CBD location before you pay.
2. Art Gallery of Western Australia — Cultural Centre, Northbridge
The permanent collection is free and the Australian section is genuinely excellent — one of the better state gallery collections for pre-20th century and contemporary Australian work. Plan for 60–90 minutes. The building is attractive and the rooms are well-paced for wandering.
Some major exhibitions are ticketed and sit alongside the free permanent collection. You don't need the ticketed shows to have a good visit.
Cost: Free for permanent collection. Booking: Not required. Watch out: Opens until 5pm. Plan your timing — this is an afternoon option, not an evening one.
3. Petition Wine Bar — State Buildings, CBD
Petition Wine Bar is inside the State Buildings on St Georges Terrace — a heritage complex of connected buildings that is genuinely one of the most beautiful spaces to have a drink in Perth. The wine list is excellent, the staff know it, and the room has the kind of atmosphere that does a lot of the work for you.
Walk-in early evening. If you're going on a weekend, arrive before 6:30pm or book ahead. Paired with dinner somewhere nearby, this is a complete and very good evening.
Cost: $$$, glasses from $14–20, bottles from $60. Booking: Walk-in early. Book for weekends. Watch out: Popular. Gets harder to get a table after 7pm without a reservation.
4. Cooking Class — CBD & Surrounds
Perth has a handful of cooking class operators worth booking — COMO The Treasury and several independent studios run hands-on evening sessions. Check the current schedule before you plan around any specific one, as programs change. Look for hands-on formats, not demonstrations.
Two to three hours, real instruction, a meal at the end. The activity gives you something to focus on together while you're still getting comfortable, and the rain outside becomes genuinely irrelevant.
Cost: $90–130 per person depending on operator and format. Booking: Required, and well ahead. Watch out: Programs vary — verify it's hands-on before you book.
5. Luna Palace Cinemas — Leederville
Perth's best independent cinema. Luna Palace programs a strong mix of arthouse and quality mainstream films that the multiplexes won't touch. The Leederville venue is the flagship — genuinely good atmosphere, reasonable prices, and Leederville itself has good options for dinner and drinks before or after.
Check what's on at lunapalace.com.au before you go. Make the cinema one part of the evening, not the whole thing.
Cost: $20 per person. Booking: Walk-in midweek. Check sessions online for weekends. Watch out: Leederville is a 10-minute drive from the CBD. Uber it — parking is annoying.
6. State Library of Western Australia — Northbridge
The wildcard, and it genuinely works. The State Library building is architecturally beautiful, free to enter, and has a good café on the ground floor. No plan required, no booking needed, zero cost if you just get coffee.
Sitting somewhere beautiful and quiet together, with something to read or look at, is underrated as a date option. It's in the Cultural Centre alongside the Art Gallery — combine both into an afternoon before heading to Petition for drinks.
Cost: Free. Coffee from $5–7. Booking: Not required. Watch out: Open until 8pm on weekdays, earlier on weekends — check before you go.
