AN EVENING IN
A relaxed game of gin rummy
A relaxed card night for two at home, once you both feel comfortable meeting there. Allow an hour, with a practice hand if needed, then play for as long as you fancy.
Why this one.
Gin rummy is made for two, using a standard deck without jokers. It gives you a simple shared focus without making a production of the evening.
The evening
No spending is needed with access to the cards and rules. Food and drinks are optional and not included.
Have ready
- A home where you both feel comfortable
- A standard 52-card deck with jokers removed
- A table and two chairs
- The linked Bicycle rules on an internet-connected phone or tablet, or a printed copy
- Optional paper and a pen for scoring
- For the alternative, music already available on a device you can both use
- ABOUT 0 MINUTES IN
Settle in with the cards
Clear a little table space and keep the linked Bicycle rules handy if either of you needs a reminder.
- ABOUT 5 MINUTES IN
Start with a hand
Make it a practice hand if useful; there’s no need to turn the evening into a lesson.
- ABOUT 15 MINUTES IN
Play while it suits you
Keep going without committing to a match target. The timing is flexible—an hour is a guide, not a requirement.
If plans change.
If the rules feel like work, put the cards aside and listen to music already available on a device you can both use. No extra purchases are needed.
